No matter how much evidence will be proffered that Obama was born in the US (and that his mother, as an American citizen) was sufficient to meet the constitutional requirements for ascending to the White House, there will be those who think that he simply isn’t an authentic American in some fashion.

It’s an interesting thing to look at the timing of this announcement though. Why release it now? Keep the powder dry, as it were, and release it when you want to completely blind-side - and it’s going to take a higher priority in media reports than the important news of the reshuffling of the DoD and CIA posts. Perhaps that was part of the WH strategy, but I think that they could have held on to this nugget for a bit longer - if only to get the rabid frothing masses who believe this nonsense to fall into the rabbit hole.

He’s finished. He will use this as an excuse to remove himself from consideration, claiming he accomplished something of note (other than bumping his TV ratings).

There’s a part of me that wishes he had waiting a year or so before this release but after reading his statement I realize that he’s well aware the birthers aren’t going to give up - he was speaking to the media and to independents.
